Symposia

Capital One Financial Literacy Symposium
March 25, 2009

Each year, Stand & Deliver: Communication Tools for Tomorrow’s Leaders hosts three symposia as supplementary learning opportunities for student participants.  On Wednesday, March 25th, we hosted our second symposium—a financial literacy workshop presented by Stand & Deliver sponsor, Capital One Bank.

Leading the symposia on behalf of Capital One Bank were Mike Wall (Divisional Senior Vice President) and Jon Trombley (Executive Vice President).  During the hour long event, Wall and Trombley guided the students through an interactive PowerPoint which dealt with issues such as credit, needs v. wants, and the value of saving.  Students participated in a financial literacy jeopardy game and were awarded prizes, such as Capital One t-shirts, for participation. At the conclusion of the program, Wall and Trombley allowed some time for questions.

The symposium generated a positive response from many of the nearly 125 student participants.  13-year-old Natalie Rivera of El Club del Barrio said she really enjoyed the symposium noting, “I learned many things that I didn’t know about credit and identity theft and I actually got a bank account”.

Similarly, 17-year-old Tiffany Fenton of American History High School also thought the event was a success.  She explains, “I do agree that your credit is very important because too many people… have bad credit and most of them don’t understand how it can affect their lifestyle (like getting an apartment or a job).  For this reason, the program was very informative.”

As an incentive for Stand & Deliver students, Capital One Bank offered to put $10 in a  savings account opened by any student attendee at Capital One Bank branch in Newark.

Alfredo “Dante” Rivera is a workshop leader with Stand & Deliver.  He believes the symposium was so critical to present to the students, stating, “it will change the way they do things.  Even if only 10% of the students got something out of it, [the event] was a success, because they may not learn this information elsewhere”.
