This
special edition of Caucus Up Close features a panel of five
discussing the Student Ambassadors program taking place
in the Newark public schools. The Student Ambassadors Outreach
Program at Rutgers-Newark builds new bridges between the
campus and Newark high school students. Now in its second
year, it's a campus-based version of the Peace Corps reminiscent
of President John F. Kennedy's call to college students
to serve the cause of peace. It serves three purposes: it
promotes the campus to Newark students, it supports their
recruitment initiatives in the Newark Public Schools, and
it enables Rutgers to mentor students who may not feel that
college is an option for them. Another unanticipated benefit
is the how the program has positively affected the Student
Ambassadors. These students advise of gaining confidence
in speaking before groups of people as well as feeling "good
about being a mentor, and serving as a positive role model
for others."
