Dr. Mildred García
President
Berkeley College
New York and New Jersey
An educator with extensive administrative and teaching
experience at all levels of higher education, Dr. Mildred
García serves as President of Berkeley College. Berkeley
College maintains five campuses in Manhattan and White Plains,
New York, and in West Paterson, Paramus and Woodbridge,
New Jersey. The College enrolls approximately 4,500 students
and awards both Baccalaureate and Associate degrees in a
wide variety of business-related fields.
Prior to assuming her current position, Dr. García
served as Vice Provost for Academic Personnel and Tenured
Professor in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department,
Arizona State University West, and Associate Director of
the Hispanic Research Center, Arizona State University,
Tempe, AZ. She also served as Assistant Vice President for
Academic Affairs at Montclair State University and as Chief
Student Affairs Officer at Hostos Community College of the
City University of New York (CUNY).
Dr. García’s research has concentrated on
equity in higher education and its impact on policy and
practice. When the Ford Foundation was seeking evaluators
to assess its Campus Diversity Initiative, Dr. García
was selected along with three other scholars. Their assessments
resulted in the 1995 coauthored monograph, Diversity in
Higher Education: A Work in Progress. She was also selected
by the Ford Foundation as part of a U.S. delegation, working
with delegations from India and South Africa, to participate
in an international seminar on diversity and democracy in
India (1997) and in South Africa (1998). Her book Affirmative
Action’s Testament of Hope: Strategies for a New Era
(1997), extended her work on how to enhance diversity issues
on college campuses. In 2000, Dr. García authored
Succeeding in an Academic Career, which focuses on how faculty
of color can succeed in higher education. Her most recent
book, Assessing Campus Diversity Initiatives, underscores
the importance of assessment and evaluation.
She has been appointed by New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey
to Chair the Education Mandate Review Study Commission,
and will also serve as upcoming Chair of the Commission
for the Center for Advancement of Racial and Ethnic Equity
(CAREE) for the American Council on Education (ACE). She
serves on the Advisory Committee of the National Science
Foundation’s Directorate for Education and Human Resources.
In addition, she serves on the Board of the National Council
for Community and Education Partnerships, the Board of The
Journal of General Education and the American Council on
Education’s Commission on Minorities in Higher Education.
She served as a member of the American Association for Higher
Education (AAHE) Board of Trustees, a past chair and past
secretary of the AAHE Hispanic Caucus and also past president
of the American Association of University Administrators.
An active member of the Association for the Study of Higher
Education (ASHE), she serves as the chair of the Association’s
Publication Committee. She was appointed by New York City
Mayor Michael Bloomberg to serve on the City’s Workforce
Investment Board and she has also been selected to serve
on the Board of Trustees of Caribbean University in Bayamón,
Puerto Rico.
Dr. García holds a doctorate and master’s
degree from Teachers College, Columbia University; a master’s
degree from New York University, a B.S. from Bernard Baruch
College of CUNY and an A.A.S. from New York City Community
College of CUNY.
Amy B. Mansue
President & CEO
Children’s Specialized Hospital
Appointed to lead the nation’s largest pediatric
rehabilitation hospital in September 2003, Ms. Mansue is
a highly regarded social services and healthcare executive,
a skillful leader and a long-time advocate for quality healthcare.
As President of Children’s Specialized Hospital,
she provides leadership to a highly skilled team of clinicians
providing specialized care for children. An affiliate member
of the Robert Wood Johnson Health System, Children’s
annually serves nearly 10,000 patients at 10 sites throughout
New Jersey including inpatient hospitals in Mountainside
and Toms River. The hospital offers centers of excellence
in Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Dysfunction, Educational and
Rehabilitation Technology, Respiratory Care and Ambulatory
Services.
In her public sector career, Ms. Mansue oversaw programs
for children, people with developmental disabilities, mental
health and Medicaid as a Deputy Commissioner in the New
Jersey Department of Human Services. She served as Deputy
Chief of Staff to Governor James McGreevey and a policy
advisor to Governor Jim Florio.
Ms. Mansue was President and Chief Executive Officer of
the former HIP of New Jersey, Senior Vice President of Corporate
Development for HIP of New York, and Vice President for
Cablevision of New Jersey.
She has served in many public service capacities including
the Children’s Specialized Hospital Board of Trustees
from 1995 to 1999. Ms. Mansue is a graduate of Leadership
New Jersey. She also served on the boards of the Organ and
Tissue Sharing Network and the New Jersey Community Development
Corporation.
In 1998, Modern Healthcare named Ms. Mansue as one of its
up and coming healthcare executives. Ms. Mansue’s
many achievements have been honored by the New Jersey Chapter
of the National Association of Social Workers, New Jersey
State Nurses Association, United Cerebral Palsy Association
and the Institute for Nursing Community Access.
Ms. Mansue received her bachelor’s degree in social
welfare and master’s degree in social work, planning
and management from the University of Alabama. She lives
in Hightstown.
