Program

Newark’s Healthcare Crisis
Show #2255
Original Airdate: 8/09/09

Description

This program takes a look at the healthcare issues impacting Newark, New Jersey’s largest city. Topics include such urban health issues as hypertension, diabetes, colon cancer, and pediatric cardiac issues.  Also discussed are the unique challenges facing Newark’s elderly population with regard to gaining access to the vital services they need. Over the past several years, inadequate funding and other pressures have forced 18 New Jersey hospitals to close, while many others face serious financial difficulties that threaten their existence.  Newark and other urban centers have been hit the hardest by hospital closings, with countless residents deprived of services that were once offered by their neighborhood hospital.  In this half-hour edition of “Newark’s Rebirth” the panel discusses how Newark is preparing to deal with the fallout of recent hospital closings, what led to their demise, the role of the State legislature, and what happens when access to health care services for the some of the state's most vulnerable citizens becomes extremely limited.
