| On this
program we look at why, after so many years, so many people
remain uninsured. Our panel is comprised of a state legislator,
an uninsured working parent, an attorney with the Office of
the Child Advocate, and the Director of Medicaid. Emmy Award-winning
host Steve Adubato moderates this discussion about what’s
being done here in New Jersey and the surrounding region to
provide health coverage for the millions of uninsured. They
also discuss the social and economic consequences and whether
there are effective ways to provide health care for all Americans.
The program not only provides answers to these questions,
but offers potential solutions to this complex and chronic
health problem.
As of 2001, an estimated 41.2 million Americans, 8 million
of whom were children, lacked health insurance. In New Jersey,
it is estimated that a little over one million people are
without any kind of health insurance. This lack of coverage
affects the health and work of countless individuals (most
of whom are poor), drives up hospital costs, and increases
pressure on state governments to provide charity care.
