Kids and Depression

Description

Depression is a serious health problem that impacts feelings, thoughts and actions, and can appear as a physical illness. It is a mood disorder that involves a child’s body, mood, and thoughts. It can affect and disrupt eating, sleeping, or thinking patterns. Treatment is necessary and many times crucial to recovery. On this Informed Choices special, kid’s behavioral health will be explored, focusing on depression in adolescents and the often-controversial use of antidepressant medications in treatment. Kids over 10 years of age will be the primary focus of this discussion. Topic areas will include signs and symptoms of depression, determining if a child is depressed, treatment options, causes, and finding the right therapist and/or physician for behavioral health problems. The panel consists of a child therapist, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and two parents whose children have been diagnosed with depression.
