Caucus: New Jersey with Steve Adubato

Program

Cancer Prevention

Description

The war against cancer is particularly important for New Jersey, a state that ranks in the top ten nationally for cancer incidence. While our survival rate is increasing due to improvements in prevention and early detection, much remains to be done. On this program, we focus on the generally neglected area of cancer prevention, emphasizing the impact of smoking, diet, exercise, and other factors on cancer rates, and our ability to save numerous lives by changing behavior in these areas. We look at the need for further research on cancer prevention including studies on addictive behavior, which contributes to the problem. We'll also talk about what's being done in the state to connect patients with treatment options.

The program begins with a mini-documentary looking at an educational program aimed at preventing breast cancer. We followed Barbara Waters of The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation North Jersey Affiliate as she talked with high school teens about the impact a healthy lifestyle and self-breast exams have on preventing cancer.
