| This
half-hour program is the first of a two-part Caucus: New
Jersey special examining the likelihood of an avian flu
pandemic in the United States. While the majority of experts
agree that some type of flu pandemic will happen in the
near future, not all are in agreement that it will be the
avian flu. The panel comprised of experts from the medical,
journalism, and research fields discuss the signs, symptoms
and risk of contracting the H5N1 virus otherwise known as
“bird flu.” The panel explains terms such as
“pandemic,” and discusses the progress in vaccinations
against this strain of flu. Further, the socio-cultural
differences that exist in Asian countries where cases of
bird flu have been reported as compared to the United States
are discussed. Comparisons to the Spanish flu of 1928 are
explored, as well as strategies to reduce the risk of exposure
of the virus are considered. Common misconceptions around
exposure and transmission are discussed.
