On this installment of Families in Focus, Emmy Award-winning
anchor Steve Adubato looks at how parents can become more
involved in their child's education.
Studies show a strong relationship between parental involvement
and students' success in school. Yet many schools are still
reluctant to allow parents to visit school and get involved
in their children's education. To counter this, Governor
McGreevey is working on an initiative for a parent involvement
policy to break down the barriers and create communication
between teachers and parents to help children achieve in
school. Some organizations are already working on breaking
down barriers and creating innovative programs that involve
teachers, parents and their children. This one-hour program
begins with a mini-documentary that features the "Parents
as Partners" program, which is a collaborative effort
between Communities in Schools of Newark and the Miller
Street Academy. The mini- documentary is followed by a studio
discussion with educators, administrators and parents who
are participating in programs that are helping them to become
more involved in their children's education.
