| This
one-hour Families in Focus special helps viewers learn how
to protect children against lead poisoning. Lead poisoning
is a critical health care issue effecting children throughout
New Jersey, particularly in urban areas. While as many as
50 percent of Newark, New Jersey's children are thought
to have elevated lead levels, according to a recent Star-Ledger
article, barely 20 percent of New Jersey's children are
screened at all. In this program, we discuss the impact
lead poisoning has on the family and highlight its physical,
mental and emotional impact, the high cost of this preventable
housing-related health hazard to the State and society-at-large,
and the complex issues associated with lead screening and
compliance. Additional topics include education initiatives
designed for parents, landlords, tenants and homeowners;
as well as the need for interagency coordination to eradicate
lead hazards. New Jersey is far behind other states in the
nation in successfully addressing this health crisis.
