This special edition of “Caucus: New Jersey” examines innovation in early childhood education.  This program features individuals who are giving kids a head start in learning.  Mitch Schonfeld, President & CEO of the Bergen Family Center located in Englewood and Hackensack, New Jersey discusses how the Bergen Family Center supports, strengthens and enriches family life with innovative programs for the local community.  The Center has received international acclaim for its Reggio Emilia preschool education curriculum. 

Also featured on the program is Jorie Quinn, the Associate Director, Early Childhood Programs at Liberty Science Center.  Located in Liberty State Park, Jersey City, New Jersey, Liberty Science Center engages learners of all ages in science excitement, provides professional development for teachers, and actively connects people of all backgrounds to pivotal science and society issues onsite, offsite and online.  Jorie explains how parents and caregivers can throw out their fear of science and start having tons of fun exploring and learning about the amazing world around us!

The second part of this program begins with Kaileé Berke, Director of Curriculum and Assessment Teaching Strategies, Inc. At the heart of the Teaching Strategies approach to early childhood education is The Creative Curriculum®, a scientifically based, comprehensive curriculum for programs serving children from birth to age 5. 

Next, Steve talks with Kenneth K. Guilmartin, Founder and Director of Music Together LLC, an international early childhood music development program.  Studies show that music learning supports all learning.  Ken discusses the use of music in enhancing early childhood development.

Finally, Steve is joined by Kathleen Priestly, the Associate Director of Professional Development at The National Institute For Early Education Research.  The Institute offers independent research-based advice and technical assistance to policy makers, journalists, researchers, and educators.  Kathy explains that kids need to know their preschool is a safe, reliable, and a secure place to be.  Kathy also discusses how to make it that way.
