Caucus: New Jersey with Steve Adubato

Program

The Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Description

The goal of this program is to provide parents and caretakers with concrete diet, nutrition, and emotional support and exercise information to assist reversing this dangerous trend of childhood obesity. Today's children are more overweight than ever before. According to the National Institute of Health, the number of children who are overweight has doubled in the last two to three decades. In New Jersey, a recent study by the Department of Health and Senior Services found that one in five children are obese and nearly another 20% are overweight. Along with the rise in childhood obesity, the incidence of related medical conditions has also increased. Pediatricians and medical researchers are reporting more frequent cases of obesity-related diseases, such as Type II diabetes, hypertension and asthma. Overweight children are also at risk for other physical and mental health problems, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, depression and low self-esteem.
