| Women business
owners are critically important to the American economy.
America's 9.1 million women-owned businesses employ 27.5
million people and contribute $3.6 trillion to the economy.
However, women continue to face unique obstacles in the
world of business. The panel of experts educates viewers
on resources available that promote growth of women-owned
business addressing such areas as business training and
technical assistance, access to credit and capital, federal
contracts, and international trade opportunities. Additionally,
the discussion covers how small female-owned businesses
can optimize opportunities to grow and expand, what resources
they need to grow and how to access them.
Tape Piece: The program begins with a
mini-documentary which was produced by Jill A. Hargrave
featuring two female entrepreneurs, Peggy McHale and Sandi
Webster who started their own business two and a half years
ago after accepting a golden handshake from American Express.
Both had worked for American Express in their offices in
the World Trade Center district in New York on 9/11. Because
of the economic downturn after 9/11 they chose not to be
relocated but took the downsizing package instead and decided
to invest it in their own company. Since they incorporated,
they have reached out to the Small Business Association's
Women Business Owners Women's Business Center in Hamilton.
We talk with Penni Nafus, Project Director of the Center
who helped them to get up to speed with Quickbooks as they
are currently responsible for their own accounting. She
has consulted with them on other questions that they need
help with, such as updating their business plan, as they
grow their business.
