first half-hour of a two-part series provides a "big
picture" look at port expansion and why this proposed
expansion to critical to New Jersey's economy. The panel
examines New Jersey's role in the global economy, job opportunities
created for local workers, quality of life issues, plans
for port redevelopment, as well as the risk to our place
in the global economy should we fail to increase port productivity.
The second-half hour panel examines what changes and improvements
are needed to make port expansion viable including those
in transportation infrastructure, terminal capacity, freight
movements on the region's highway and rail system, creating
a new system of distribution centers and warehouses, and
the environmental impact of these proposed changes.
Tape Piece - Produced by Leandra Little,
this segment gives an overall look at the Port of New York
and New Jersey's main issues such as the ongoing dredging
project, security, accommodating increasing cargo arrivals,
and dock side changes. We examine the importance of our
shipping industry to the regional economy and include an
interview with a longshoreman, Virgil Maldonado, a 27 year
old super post panamax crane operator. We also talk with
Admiral Rick Larrabee, Director Port Commerce Department,
the Port Authority of NY and NJ; Maurice C. Byan, President
and CEO, Global Terminal and Container Services, Inc.; and
Peter Palmer, Somerset County Freeholder and Chairman of
the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority Freight
