| Today,
more and more responsibility is falling on health care consumers
in choosing doctors and hospitals, and making important
decisions regarding their care. Patients must become their
own advocates to insure that they receive appropriate attention
and care. This is especially true in the era of managed
care where physicians often see many patients in a day.
This panel addresses this concept of "personal advocacy"
by discussing educational resources on the Internet and
in the community, and describing insurance options for uninsured
and underinsured populations.
Additionally, this half-hour program outlines effective
doctor/patient communication techniques and highlights new
diagnostic and treatment options for women fighting breast
cancer, the topic of second and third opinions, and the
importance of personal support - family member/friend to
accompany to medical appointments.
